Ready for the season

Two weeks ago I asked whether your insurance travels with you. This letter answers what you asked, and a few things you didn't, before you lock the door for the holidays.

Everyone celebrates the day you get the keys.

Then the boxes are unpacked and the real life of a home begins: the first repair, the first holiday table, the first time you leave it alone for a week. That is the part where I want to stay close. Each month you'll get one letter from me with what matters for your home. Once a client, always family.

What stays covered, and where the gaps are

Tap each card to read the facts.

CoveredYour house

The same events your policy covers when you're home, such as fire or wind, are still covered while you travel.

CoveredYour belongings, even on the trip

Most policies cover personal property wherever it is, including a suitcase stolen from a hotel. Jewelry, cash and similar valuables usually have lower limits.

GapA home left empty too long

Many policies limit coverage once a home has been vacant for a set period, typically 60 days. On the standard HO-3 policy, vandalism isn't covered after more than 60 consecutive days vacant. Each policy defines "vacant" its own way.

GapFrozen pipes

Freeze damage is covered only if you used reasonable care to keep the heat on, or to shut off the water and drain the system.

Two sentences on what HAR's October report means for homeowners. Curious what your own home is worth today? Send me a message and I'll prepare a personal review.

Have a question about your home?

Write to me. I'll find the answer with you, based on facts. And if someone you love is thinking about a move, I'd be honored to help.

Happy Thanksgiving, from my family to yours.
